Previously an independent kingdom, in 1824-26, 1851-52, and 1885-86, Myanmar was invaded by the British Empire and became a part of India. The Japanese expelled the British with the help of General Aung San and occupied the country during the World War II, but it was retaken by the British in 1945. Myanmar has become a sovereign independent state since 4 January 1948. Myanmar was ruled by the Britishers and for a short term by Japanese. It is remarkable to note that Myanmar is the country that regained her independence first though she was the last country to be colonized.
